CHEMICAL COMPOSITION, ADULTICIDAL AND REPELLENT ACTIVITY OF ESSENTIAL OILS FROM Mentha longifolia L. AND Lavandula dentata L. AGAINST Culex pipiens L.
Ali
Al-Sarar
The essential oils from Mentha longifolia L., and Lavandula dentata L. were evaluated for their insecticidal and repellent activity against adult females of Culex pipiens L. The two oils showed LC50 values of 0.215and 0.217 µl / l, respectively. Lavandula dentata oil showed higher repellent activity than Mentha longifolia oil against adults of Culex pipiens; paraffin oil significantly prolonged the time of protection for the two oils. The longest time of protection was 165 min for L dentata oil, at 1 µl/cm2, when the tested oils were applied in paraffin oil. The principle compounds in the two oils were pulegone, l-menthone, 1-8-cineole, eucarvone and borneol for (M. longifolia); and camphor, fenchone, linalool and fenchol for (L. dentata). The two oils were effective as repellent substances when compared with commercial materials. Further studies are needed to isolate the most effective mosquito control agents from these oils.

The average biology of Coccinella undecimpunctata L. were showed that when it was reared on Sitobion avenaeFab.The incubation period, total larval stage period , pre-pupal period, pupal and adult male and female periods was 7.0 ± 0.0, 13.4 ±0.7, 1.4±0.5, 6.6 ± 0.5, 63.7 ± 23.7 and 78.7 ± 9.3 days, respectively, whereas on Schizaphis graminum Rond., these periods were 7.0 ± 0.0, 14.8 ± 0.7, 1.4±0.5, 60.± 0.7 and 61.0± 8.0 and 82.3 ± 11.7 days, respectively. The mean fecundity of C. undecimpunctata on S. avenae and S. graminum were 415 ± 154.7 and 406.7 ± 51.7 eggs per female, respectively. Total longevity of male and female C. undecimpunctata on S. avenae and S. graminum were 92.1 ± 24.6 and 90.2 ± 8.4 and 107.1 ± 10.2 and 111.5 ± 12.2 days, respectively.

Insect growth regulators and plant extracts have an important effect on insects obviously on development and moulting process in different stages. Teflubenzuron (Nomolt) growth regulator and the plant extract Oxymatrine (Kingbo) were applied separately and together on Sesamia criticaLed. Nomolt gave the highest effect on adults and eggs and changed the behaviour of the adults in laying eggs in unusual places with lower hatching ratio. About its effect on the eggs, it caused decrease in hatching ratio and a higher mortality rate. When larvae developed into pupal stage; some of them formed in midi forms between larva and pupa then died, about those which lived up to the adult but in smaller sizes, less egg laying and less hatching than those treated with Kingbo, mixture or untreated.
Kingbo has the least or almost no effect on adult behavior, hatchability of eggs also a very little effect on egg hatchability in eggs experiment. The application of the mixture of Nomolt and Kingbo resulted in an intermediate effect between each of them alone.
